With my Student Art Show website, I hope to create a web based, interactive extension of the Student Art Show in the gallery. I would like to create an area where viewers can continue to view the work of USI’s students long after the exhibition is taken down. I plan to present the show in a way that mirrors the way it would be, or was, presented in the exhibition. I want to divide the student works into their own categories, so that it is easier for the viewer to find the works they want to look at. I would also like to include a sub category for the recipients of the many awards that are given to the students exhibiting in the show, so that the viewer can see those works independent of the other works, and the students who won the awards can easily find their works. I hope to make the website easy to navigate, while still visually interesting and somewhat interactive. I would like the viewer to feel almost as if they are visiting a “real” gallery and viewing the work there, but keep things easy to navigate at the same time. I also want to present the student work in a way that is respectful of the artists. Overall, I would like the site to be reflective of the artists that are exhibiting, as well as the students of USI, and the Art Department as a whole by making it a very unique and visually appealing website that is easy to navigate.

Jordan :
I really enjoy the idea of using scanned textures and patterns as the embellishments for your site. Very creative and unique. In some places, where the backgrounds tile out, I don’t think it works quite as nicely. I know that you said the site isn’t completed, but on the “writing” page, things aren’t laying out correctly. I’m not sure if that is just a result of it being incomplete or if it might be a browser problem. There is some overlapping of words and links happening on that page, that I don’t think was intentional. I really love the simplicity of your homepage, and that it is asymmetrical. On your about page, I think you could pull the body text up some, and make it a more central point on the page. As it is, it seems like I have to “hunt” for it. Overall, I really like where the site is going, and I look forward to seeing it completed.
Cameron :
I really like the industrial feel of your overall design, but I love that you kept it simple inside of that aesthetic. I know that the site is incomplete, but I am curious as to what the red graffiti arrows at the bottom are going to do, or where they are going to be. They are interesting, and I like them a lot, but I’m not sure how they tie in with the rest of the site. Everything seems very geometric, while that is very organic. I like the idea of the contrast, but having it be such a warm tone among so many other cool tones seems to be almost too much contrast. On your about page, I think you could include a similar green box around your photo and the body copy. There isn’t much to separate them from the background as it is. I love the simplicity of your contact page. I look forward to seeing it when it’s completed.

Kat:
I love the simplicity of your overall design. I think it reflects well on your style. The only issue I have is the alignment in a few places. I don’t like where the social networking icons are lining up, I think they should either be aligned with the black line above them, or with the pictures themselves. As it is, it seems as if they are just slightly off. I have the same problem with the alignment of the links. Also, is the word “photographer” centered under your name? It seems slightly off, but it might just be the overall left alignment of the page as a whole throwing me off, which I’m sure is unintentional. I’m also not sure why your boxes are different sizes. May be a view thing. Not sure.
Michael:
I like the idea behind your layout. I really like the splash page, I’m not sure I understand the white bar across the top, unless there are going to be more items included up there. I like the idea of the gallery page, I think the alignment of the bubbles needs a bit more work, and again, I’m not sure I understand the white bar on top. I feel like your site is going to be easy to navigate, which is nice. It’s simple, but unique and interesting.

I really like the idea behind your website. I think some of the text could be formatted a little better, for example, the mission statement is crowding against the left side. I really think the only thing I can say needs work is the text layout. It seems a bit awkward in some places, I know that this isn’t the “finished” site. It might be fun to implement some of the jquery we are going to learn with the next assignment in your navigation area, as it is, it is a bit static. Overall, I really like the design. I think it’s funky and unique.

The overall layout of this website is nice. I’m not sure what you were aiming for with the banner and the distortion of the photograph. Also, I feel like the photograph is competing with the logo and text on top of it for attention. I think the biggest thing that needs to be done is some text design. Overall the text just seems static and lacking in “design.” The color scheme and layout of the page as a whole is very nice.

My goal for my photography portfolio site is to create a well organized and simple layout that reflects my personality and style. When researching other photographer’s websites, I came upon two websites that I think would work well for my style if combined. The website of Marten van Dijl has nice navigation qualities, but I prefer the slideshow quality of Dan Kennedy‘s website. I would like to take elements from each of these websites and shape them to fit the design and style of my own site and my own work. For the slideshow I will be using a jquery lightbox instead of a slideshow. I would like to keep the slideshow element intact in some way, by using a lightbox that has both forward and back buttons on the pop up window. I prefer the idea of being able to click once, and continue instead of clicking a thumbnail, and then having to close out of the box to click on another picture. I want to keep the color scheme of the website simple, using black and white, with a possible splash of a color in the navigation. I would like to separate my work into specific categories including; alternative processes, sliver gelatin prints, digital manipulation, photojournalism, pictorialism, portraiture, and nature. Though I want to focus mainly on my work, I would also like to include a space to put my artist statement and resume, and possibly a place that I can be contacted from. Overall, I really just want to make sure that my site reflects my style and personality.

For this design I chose to stick with a simple, easy to navigate layout. My main goal was to organize the information that was already present on the webpage, in a matter that would make it easier to navigate. I kept the colors that were present in the original site, but muted them down so that the logo would be the main focus. I split the main content area into three different sections, allowing the middle section to be used occasionally for advertisement for upcoming events. I chose to do the three sections of content to cut back on scrolling as much as possible. In the navigation area, I chose to include the mission statement on the pages that would not have subpages within them. For example, the home page shows the mission statement on the right, and the resources page shows sublinks on the right side. I think having the sublinks appear only when they are needed makes navigation between pages easier.
If more time were allowed, I would probably concentrate on making the pages seem less text heavy, because as they are, they don’t seem to have much visual interest that keeps the viewer on the page. However, I’m pretty happy with the outcome of this website overall.

I like the direction you are going. I think, as we discussed during the critique, that if you change the background of the right side as the pages change, you should also do something along the same lines with the navigation area. I think I suggested during critique doing a gradient, but using two different shades of the color that will be on the right. So, for example, when the right side is red, make the gradient go from a dark red to a lighter red. I hope that makes sense. I think it was mentioned when you presented the idea in the beginning to include the other “arts” somehow on the page as well. You are only showcasing the visual arts with the easel, and even though it is only on the home page, it might offend those who aren’t visual artists. I like the structure of the design overall, it seems very clean, very simple, and very easy to navigate. I look forward to seeing it when it’s completed!

I really like the overall layout of your design. I agree with the class comments about the background, I feel like you should go downtown and take the picture to make it fit your design better. I’m not sure if it will work, but I wonder what it would look like if the background photograph were taken down a touch in opacity. As it is, the entirety of the page seems a bit overwhelming. I’m trying to see what the background photo is, and see what’s going on on top of it all at once. Overall, I really like the direction you are going with this, and I look forward to seeing the final result.
